World Short Track Championships Sheffield
10 March 2011
- From 11-13 March 2011 the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships will take place in Sheffield – Great Britain. More than 130 skaters out of 31 countries are attending this event organized by the National Ice Skating Association of Great Britain. The rink were the Championships will take place is not new for Short Track: it is the same as for the 2001 World Championships: Sheffield Motorpoint Arena. This beautiful stadium was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 31st May 1991. The building’s versatile indoor multi-purpose auditorium can easily accommodate audiences from theatre-style shows of 3,500 up to centre stage productions hosting audiences of 13,000. The £34 million building was constructed in time to host all kinds of events. Among them Endurocross every year, which involves converting the Arena by over 100 truckloads dumping 2000 tons of soil on to the ice floor to create a six-lane dirt track. For this World Championship Short track the Ice will be in perfect condition: the staff of the Motorpoint Arena and the volunteers of OC’s chairman Ken Pendrey have worked very hard to make the circumstances perfect for the 2011 ISU World Short track Speed Skating Championships.
